Natural Dusting Powders and Supplies by Elizabeth Adams Rachel's Supply is proud to present Elizabeth Adams's ( Rachel's Mother ) line of premium handmade powder making accessories.

Making a natural, soft and fragrant talcum type body and dusting powder without talc ( which can contain abestos ) is very simple to do and very economical and is a lot of fun to do! You can also create medicated body and foot powders as well.
We prefer Arrowroot powder or Tapioca Starch as a base as there natural qualities are almost identical to talcum, but you can also add or use other natural powders such as Kaolin Clay, Rice Flour, Oat Flour or Cornstarch, we recommend you try them all in different combinations to achieve a powder that is perfect for you.

To make your own dusting powder, add the contents of a recipe ( we've listed our favorites at the bottom of this page ), blend well using a blender or stirring by hand, seal in a container and allow to set for a few days before using.

Note: We have found that adding the oil to a cotton pad, then placing this a jar with the powder and allowing to sit for about 24 hours, then shaking powder to mix it up, and allowing it sit another 24 hours works very well, and the cotton pad will prevent oil from making any clumps in the powder .

Using different fragrances or essential oils gives you unlimited possibilities.

M01 Elizabeth Adams Vanillin Body Powder Base
For those wanting to create your own unique, all natural body powder products, this is a great ready to use base created by Elizabeth Adams. It is a lightly scented body powder with a vanilla fragrance derived from pure vanillin powder. Contains arrowroot powder, kaolin clay, vanillin powder and cornstarch.
It is ready to use, or you can design your own body powder blend by adding other fragrances, it will maintain a slight vanilla note when other fragrances are added.
Base powder is shipped in 32 ounce PET bottles with large mouths for easy dispensing. Each jar contains 32 ounces volume, enough to fill 8 each 4 ounce dust bottles or containers, 4 each 8 ounce dust bottles or containers, etc.

Arrowroot Powder 100% natural arrowroot powder is made from the root of the Arrowroot Plant (Maranta arundinacea). It is used in cooking and as a natural substitute for talc powder.

Dry Flo AF Modified Cornstarch Powder Dry Flo AF starch is a hydrophobically modified natural polymer which imparts a smooth, velvety feel in a variety of topical personal care and cosmetic products such as powders and makeup. Can also be used in lotions (oil/water emulsions). Usage rates: creams/lotions....2-35%; body powders....5 to 70%.

100% Pure, Natural Baking Soda Powder Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda (alkali) is used in baby powders, feminine powders, deodorant powders, hair powders and body powders. Has great absorption, and is healthy for the skin.

100% Pure, Natural Tapioca Starch Powder Tapioca starch can replace other powders and starches in your handmade formulas. Tapioca starch has many times more thickening power than corn starch or arrowroot starch in mask preparations. Tapioca starch also makes a great addition to body powders. It is bright white and has a very smooth flow.

100% Pure, Natural Lavender Flower Powder Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) flowers powder is imported from France. Soothing lavender powder may be added to powders, baby products, toiletries, soaps, bath salts and teas and so on.
Recommended powder solution is 1% Lavender Flower Powder. To obtain this, simply mix 5cc Lavender Flower Powder to 2 cups powder.

Natural Aloe Vera Freeze Dried Powder Aloe Vera Freeze Dried Powder is used in powders, creams and lotions. It’s a well known healing and soothing agent for damaged, dry skin. It is soothing and healing for burns, skin irritations, and raw open wounds.
Recommended powder solution is 1% Aloe Vera. To obtain this, simply mix 5cc Aloe Vera Freeze Dried Powder to 2 cups powder.
This product has a multitude of uses for cosmetics and toiletries. Color: White to light beige, will darken over time. INCI: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (and) Maltodextrin. Maltodextrin allows for the powder to flow freely.

Natural Zinc Oxide Powder Zinc oxide is a natural mineral which has been used safely for generations to shield against the harmful effects of the sun. Zinc oxide forms a protective physical barrier over the skin and stops the harmful UV rays, providing the most complete protection. Because it absorbs ultraviolet light, zinc oxide can be used in powders, ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn. Some ointment-based preparations such as zinc oxide are water repellent and stay on even during swimming. Zinc oxide is ideal for the nose and ears while swimming. A deodorant can be made simply from zinc oxide and powder which works by killing underarm bacteria so they won't smell. Zinc oxide is the main active ingredient in most diaper rash formulas. Ours is not micronized and is USP. ( Tip: You can also use it full strength as a diaper rash ointment or on your nose as a complete sun block. Just add water to desired consistency. )
Recommended powder solution is 1% Zinc Oxide Powder ( if you check the ingredients on the most popular medicated powders in stores, you will find most of them are 1% zinc oxide and menthol ). To obtain this, simply mix 5cc Zinc Oxide Powder to 2 cups powder.

Natural Black Walnut Hull Powder ( For Foot Powders ) Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), powdered hull. Through the ages it has been used to rid the bowel of parasites such as tapeworms. It is also used as an antifungal in cases of Candida yeast, ringworm, athlete's foot and thrush. Recommended powder solution is 3-5% Black Walnut Powder. To obtain this, simply mix 15-25cc Black Walnut Powder to 2 cups powder.

Pure Vanillin Powder This is food grade vanillin powder, 100% pure. Imparts a delicious vanilla fragrance to powders and cosmetic blends. Recommended powder solution is 5% Vanillin Powder. To obtain this, simply mix 30cc Vanillin Powder to 2 cups powder.

Pure Chamomile Powder This is made from Chamomile Flowers, 100% pure. Organically grown. Recommended powder solution is 5% Powder. To obtain this, simply mix 30cc Powder to 2 cups powder.

Cosmetic Grade Glitter ( Mica ) Used to make shimmering powders. Recommended mixture is 1 teaspoon mica to 2 cups powder, but you can adjust to your own taste, some like more, some less.

Kaolin Clay A very good mixing clay for all dusting powder recipes, widely used in other cosmetic recipes as well. A good dusting choice for sensitive, dry or maturing skin as it does not overly "pull" the natural oils from your skin.
When used as a clay mask, it will help stimulate circulation while gently exfoliating and cleansing your skin. When added directly to the bath tub it will soften your skin.

Perfumed After Bath Powder

8 ounces Tapioca Starch
4 ounces Corn Starch
4 ounces Arrowroot Powder
22 drops fragrance or essential oils.

Combine powders and mix well.
Add oils to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes 2 cups powder

Light Dusting Powder 11 ounces Tapioca Starch
4 ounces Baking Soda
1 ounce Kaolin Powder
15-18 drops fragrance or essential oils.

Combine powders and mix well.
Add oils to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes 2 cups powder

Silky Gardenia Powder 8 ounces Tapioca Starch
5 ounces Corn Starch
3 ounces Arrowroot Powder
12-15 drops gardenia essential oil.

Combine powders and mix well.
Add gardenia essential oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes 2 cups powder

Absorbent Bath Powder for Oily Skin ( Not quite as smooth as other powders, but it really is absorbent and will leave skin feeling clean and fresh )

You will need:
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup rice flour
1 teaspoon orrisroot powder
If you want a perfumed powder, add several drops of your favorite essential oil, or leave this out if you prefer unscented.

Combine powders and mix well to make sure orrisroot powder is evenly dispersed.
Add essential oils ( if you are adding fragrance ) to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 48 hours ( a little longer than other powders to make sure orrisroot has absorbed fragrance ), shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use.
Makes 2 cups powder

Rose Bath Powder Recipe
You will need:
1/2 cup tapioca starch
1/2 cup arrowroot powder
1 cup cornstarch powder
5cc rosehip powder
16 drops rose fragrance oil

Combine powders and mix well.
Add fragrance oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes 2 cups powder

Vanilla Dusting Powder Recipe ( Leaves a long lasting, pleasant vanilla fragrance on the skin )
You will need:
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup tapioca starch
8 drops vanilla essential oil
30cc Pure Vanillin Powder
Combine powders and mix well.
Add fragrance oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes 2 cups powder

Extra Smooth Face and Body Powder ( good for absorbing oil and leaves a fresh feel to skin ) You will need:
1 Cup Arrowroot Powder
1/2 Cup Dry Flo Powder
1/2 Cup Rice Flour
30 cc Lemon Peel Powder
30 cc Chamomile Powder
A few drops of your favorite fragrance oils ( or you can use unscented )

Combine powders and mix well.
Add fragrance oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes just over 2 cups powder

Shimmering Rose Dusting Powder Recipe ( Imparts delightful rose fragrance and shimmering effect, pinkish powder looks great in puff containers ) You will need:
1/2 cup of arrowroot powder
1/2 cup corn starch
1/4 cup Rose Clay
1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup tapioca starch
1 teaspoon of cosmetic grade glitter
10 drops of rose fragrance oil
Combine powders and mix well.

Add fragrance oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes just over 2 cups powder

Chamomile Healing Skin Body Powder Recipe ( A good tonic for the skin ) You will need:
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 tapioca starch
1/4 cup oatmeal flour
1/4 cup rice flour
1 cup arrowroot powder
30cc chamomile flower powder
1 teaspoon zinc oxide powder
15 drops geranium oil

Combine powders and mix well.
Add fragrance oil to absorbent cotton pad.
Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes just over 2 cups powder

Cooling Foot and Body Powder Recipe You will need:
1/2 cup powdered arrowroot
1/2 cup oatmeal flour
1/2 cup rice flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon powdered ginger
10 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops lavender essential oil
Combine powders and mix well.
Add oils to absorbent cotton pad.

Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes just over 2 cups powder

Natural Baby Powder ( if rash is a problem, add zinc oxide powder ) 1 cup tapioca starch
1 cup cornstarch
30cc chamomile powder
30cc lavender powder
30cc oatmeal flour
Add powders to mixing container and shake well, it is now ready to use.
Healing Foot Powder ( Good for athletes foot, apply 2-3 times daily ) 1 cup tapioca starch
1 cup cornstarch
30cc chamomile powder
30cc black walnut powder
30cc zinc oxide powder
10 drops tea tree oil
Combine powders and mix well.
Add oils to absorbent cotton pad.

Place pad with oil in container with powder, shake or stir well, allow to sit 24 hours, shake or stir again, allow to sit another 24 hours, shake or stir powder, remove pad and discard, place powder into containers, it is ready to use. Makes just over 2 cups powder
